Three years for old cars to comply with seatbelt ruling

KUALA LUMPUR: Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh reminded motorists that if their private vehicles were registered on or before Jan 1, 1995, and have no rear seatbelts, they have three years to comply with the new seatbelt regulation.

Meanwhile, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin has informed that the Government will make it compulsory for passengers on new buses, especially tourist coaches, to wear seatbelts.

In Kuala Lumpur, Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat said that owners of locally-produced cars not fitted with rear seatbelts will be informed of where they can get them installed come June 17, when the Government is also expected to reveal more details of the move.
