KOTA KINABALU: A slight increase was recorded in fatalities involving road accidents in Sabah.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said a total of 14,588 road accidents with 325 deaths were reported in Sabah last year compared to 14,319 cases with 319 dead in 2007.
He said a majority of the fatalities recorded last year were motorcyclists with 98 deaths followed by car drivers and passengers (76) and pedestrians (22).
"Most of the accidents occurred in Tawau (46 cases) and Kota Kina-balu (33 cases)," he said after a briefing by the Road Safety Depart-ment at Wisma Muis near here.
On the mat rempit (illegal motorcycle racers) menace, Abdul Rahim said that although it was not a problem in Sabah, road safety awareness campaign should be intensified, especially for school students and also in institutions of higher learning. He suggested that talks on road safety be conducted in schools to enhance students’ awareness on the matter.
