1. BACKGROUND
1.1 The Malaysian Road Safety Council
The Malaysian Road Safety Council (MKJR) was established in back in 15 Feb 1954 when it was still known as the Federal Road Safety Council. It was formed as an NGO to advise the Member of Transport at the time on road safety matters. The council has evolved over the years and finally became the Malaysian Road Safety Council in 1963. There are also road safety councils at the state level who are members of the Malaysian Road Safety Council.
1.2 A Decade of Action For Road Safety
Every year 1.3 million people are killed in road crashes worldwide and many more are seriously injured. Road crashes are now the leading cause of death for children and young people aged between 10 and 24. This worrying trend has made road safety a significant part of the UN’s global agenda. In Nov 2009, the Russian Federation hosted the First Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety. The conference was attended by around 70 Ministers and a high number of senior ranking officials representing Governments and NGOs.
The outcome of the conference gave hope to an improvement of road safety conditions globally as the Ministers approved the Moscow Declaration which calls for a Decade of Action for Road Safety. Under the declaration, nations agree to strengthen Governmental leadership and increase political will to improve and implement more effective road safety initiatives in order to bring down the death tolls.
In support of the call for A Decade of Action for Road Safety, MKJR would like to work with corporate sponsors to embark on a nationwide Road Safety Walk to raise awareness on road safety issues. This walk is planned to be held in early 2010 and each state in Malaysia will host the event once.

1.3 Road Safety Walk
The Road Safety Walk will be coordinated and spearheaded by the State MKJR in cooperation with the State Road Safety Department. Corporate sponsors can support this programme financially or in terms of advertising, promoting, participating and conduct awareness activities during the event, thus, forming a road safety smart partnership – and answering the international call for A Decade of Action For Road Safety.
