THE Road Safety Department (JKJR) highlighted the importance of stopping at red lights and not speeding recently.
During the campaign, 117 helmets were given to motorcyclists in exchange for old ones. A total of 11 summonses were also issued to those who were not wearing their rear seat belts in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.
Stickers highlighting speeding were distributed while road users and pedestrians were given advice on road safety and using proper crossing.
Road Safety Department director-general Datuk Suret Singh said according to the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), only 40% of people were wearing the rear seat belts.
He said most people were not keen on wearing the seat belts unless made compulsory.
Based on the yearly statistics, the total number of deaths involving pedestrians has reduced by 6% compared with 2007 where 36 cases were recorded while in 2008 there were 598 cases.
From January to April 2008, 228 deaths were recorded compared with the 203 in the same period this year, which is a reduction of 11%.
The campaign saw JKJR working together with the police, Road Transport Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and Road Safety Marshal Club Kuala Lumpur.
