SOME 170 motorcyclists and their pillion riders waiting to board the Penang ferry in Butterworth had a pleasant surprise when they were given new Sirim-approved crash helmets to replace their old ones.
The new helmets were jointly sponsored by the Road Safety Department (JKJR) and CNI Holdings Berhad.
They were given out on Thursday by JKJR programme & project implementation division director Nik Yusaimi Yussof as part of the JKJR’s Road Safety Advocacy Campaign.
They included 20 children’s helmets.
Nik Yusaimi said the campaign was vital as motorcyclists and their pillion riders were in the high risk group as they were the biggest number of fatalities in road accidents.
"Last year, 3,898 fatalities involving motorcyclists and their pillion riders were reported in the country of whom 68% died due to head injuries," he added.
He said the department, in an effort to reduce the death rate and risk of injury among motorcyclists, had lined up several advocacy campaigns for the next two years as part of its community programmes.
Nik Yusaimi said the ongoing campaign included promoting the wearing of bright jackets and clothing among motorcyclists and educating them to ride their machines at a safe speed.
Among those present were Penang JKJR director S. Jegan, Kedah JKJR director Surentharan Mathavan, Johor JKJR director Noormazura Mat Nawi, CNI corporate communication manager Kim Teoh and Penang Port Sdn Bhd general manager (marine) Shahruddin Zakaria.
